Happy Birthday Dear Wine Blog
365 days ago, I began this little wine blog adventure. The inspiration was a Gary Vaynerchuk’s book, Crush It – Why Now is the Time To Cash In On Your Passion. The motivation was the branding of an eventual coffee and wine bar in Spokane, WA. The result has been a wild and humbling ride that has led to far more than I could have imagined. In one respect it is hard to believe that a year has already gone by, in another, it is overwhelming to think of everything that has happened. If I were to boil the year […]
Twitter Helps Fight City Hall
This crazy business adventure began with a tweet and yesterday a twitter plea could lead to the solution that helps open Nectar Tasting Room in 2010. It seems as if no business opens without some sort of opposition, struggle and set back. Budget troubles, they don’t worry me; I can mitigate the budget by making different choices. Contractors, they just require constant monitoring. Backordered merchandise just sends me back to the drawing board. Disappearing designers, there is always someone else to jump in. City red tape… …stumped… City code, regulation, permits, all of these things are out of my control. […]
Maryhill Winery Value with a View
I recently had the privilege of visiting Maryhill Winery as part of a press familiarization trip. As I sift back through my notes to re-live the adventure, two thoughts come to mind. This is an awesome place to visit. The wines are an amazing quality to price ratio (QPR)…all 29 of them. Founded in 1999, Maryhill Winery has grown to 80,000 cases making it the 15th largest winery in the state and one of the largest family owned wineries. Craig and Vicki Leuthold, from Spokane, WA are passionately involved in every step of the journey. Situated on the Washington side […]
From the Grape to the Glass Pt 3: Harvest and Crush
In August we began following the 2010 Barrister Winery Bacchus Cabernet Sauvignon from the grape to the glass. The 2010 vintage has been a nail-biter and with grapes being harvested on November 4, Barrister owners Greg Lipsker and Michael White waited until the last possible minute to get as much flavor in the grape as possible. Harvest time has arrived, now the work begins. Part 1: Progress Reports Part 2: The Science of Grapes The Bacchus Cabernet vines, planted in 1972, are some of the oldest in the state. Wineries like Longshadows, Efeste, Walla Walla Vintners, and Barrister bring in […]
